Welcome to June—the garden is buzzing with life, the veg beds are filling up, and fruit trees are doing their thing. But with all this activity comes a healthy dose of maintenance. Whether you’re growing tomatoes in tubs or managing an orchard of apple trees, here’s what to be doing in your UK garden this month.
🍅 Plant Out Tomatoes, Courgettes & Veg (With Support!)
Now that the risk of frost is behind us, you can safely plant out your tender veg. Tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers, beans—they’re all ready to stretch their roots in open soil or large containers.
Top tips:
-
Use bamboo canes, tomato spirals or mesh supports as needed
-
Water deeply and consistently to prevent stress
-
Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weeds
🛒 Pick up peat-free compost, growbags, and plant supports in-store at Kings or online with national delivery.
🐛 Watch Out for Aphids
Warm, dry weather is prime time for aphids. They multiply fast and love feasting on new growth, especially on roses, beans, and fruit trees.
👀 Keep an eye on your plants’ tips and undersides of leaves.
🪰 Use natural predators (like ladybirds), a blast of water, or an eco-friendly spray to keep them at bay.
🛒 We stock a comprehensive range of eco-conscious pest control solutions.
🌳 Remove Suckers from Fruit Trees
Suckers are vigorous shoots that grow from the base or rootstock of fruit trees. They divert energy from fruit production and should be removed as soon as they appear.
✂️ Simply pull or cut them away as close to the base as possible.
🐛 Set Pheromone Traps for Moths
June is the time to set out pheromone traps in your fruit trees to catch codling moths (apple and pear) and plum maggots.
🪤 These traps use scent lures to attract male moths, disrupting the breeding cycle.
🌳 Hang them now to protect your harvest later! Find pheromone traps in-store at Kings.
🕸️ Net Your Fruit Trees and Bushes
Birds love your ripening fruit just as much as you do. Use netting to protect strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, and young apples or cherries.
📏 Choose wildlife-friendly mesh sizes and secure edges so birds can’t get trapped.
🛒 We’ve got fruit netting, crop cages and supports in both our Exmouth and Sidmouth stores.
🍑 Feed Pot-Grown Fruit Trees
Container-grown fruit trees need a little extra care. Feed them every couple of weeks with a high potassium liquid feed (like tomato feed) to encourage fruiting.
💧 Don’t forget to keep them well-watered, especially in hot spells.
✂️ Take Softwood Cuttings
Now’s a great time to take softwood cuttings from shrubs like lavender, fuchsia, and forsythia.
📍 Take 10cm cuttings of soft, non-flowering growth
📍 Strip lower leaves and plant in moist, gritty compost
📍 Keep in a propagator or under a clear plastic bag until rooted
🌿 It’s a lovely way to grow more of your favourites for free!
