Why autumn is the best time to plant trees
If you’ve been thinking about adding a new tree to your garden, there’s no better time than now. The soil is still warm from summer, there’s more rainfall, and the cooler air reduces stress on young trees. This combination helps roots establish before growth picks up again in spring.
Whether you’re planting a fruit tree, adding some height to a border, or replacing one that’s seen better days, planting in autumn sets your tree up for success.
When to plant trees in the UK
- Container-grown trees can be planted at almost any time, but autumn and early spring are ideal.
- Bare-root trees are best planted between November and March while dormant.
- If it’s too frosty or waterlogged, temporarily heel in (partially bury) bare-root trees in a sheltered patch until conditions improve.
How to plant a tree – step-by-step
Step | What to do | Why it matters / Top tip |
---|---|---|
1. Choose the right spot | Pick a sunny or lightly shaded area with well-drained soil. Make sure there’s enough space for the tree’s mature size. | Avoid planting too close to buildings, fences or other trees. |
2. Dig the hole | Make it roughly twice as wide as the root ball or root spread, but only as deep as the roots. Loosen the soil at the base. | A wide hole encourages roots to spread; too deep can cause waterlogging. |
3. Position the tree | Place it so the root collar (where trunk meets roots) sits level with the soil surface. Backfill with the same soil, gently firming as you go. | Planting too deep can suffocate roots. Firm gently – don’t compact. |
4. Water and stake | Water well immediately after planting. Add a stake and soft tie if your site is exposed or windy. | Keeps young trees stable while roots establish. |
5. Mulch and protect | Spread 5–8cm of bark or compost mulch around the base, leaving space around the trunk. Use guards if rabbits or deer are nearby. | Mulch keeps moisture in and weeds out. Guards protect from nibbling. |
6. Check and care | Keep soil moist (not waterlogged) and weed-free. Loosen ties as the tree grows. | The first year is crucial – regular checks make all the difference. |
Extra planting tips from Kings
- Soak bare-root trees for an hour before planting to rehydrate the roots.
- Don’t add fertiliser right away — it can push top growth before roots have settled.
- A light application of mycorrhizal fungi (available in-store) helps new roots establish faster.
- Remove stakes after 1–2 years so the tree can strengthen naturally.
