Summer sunshine is a treat—but when temperatures soar, it can be tough on your houseplants. Whether you’re dealing with a full-blown heatwave or just a streak of sunny days, here’s how to keep your indoor jungle healthy and happy.
1. Mind the sun
You might think houseplants love the sunshine, but intense, direct sunlight can scorch their leaves—especially through hot glass. Move them slightly back from south-facing windows or use a sheer curtain to filter the rays.
2. Water wisely
In hot weather, plants lose moisture faster. Some might need watering more frequently, but it’s important not to overdo it. Test the soil with your finger—if it’s dry a couple of centimetres down, it’s time for a drink. Always use pots with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
3. Raise the humidity
Plants like ferns, calatheas, and peace lilies love a bit of moisture in the air. Mist them gently in the morning or place their pots on trays filled with pebbles and water (just make sure the base of the pot isn't sitting in the water).
4. Keep things cool
Indoor plants can struggle with the heat just like we do. Keep rooms well-ventilated and try to avoid placing plants near radiators, ovens, or in the path of hot sunbeams. A fan can help circulate air—just don’t point it directly at the plants.
5. Dust those leaves
Hotter weather means more dust in the air. A soft, damp cloth can be used to gently clean leaves so they can photosynthesise properly. Your plants will thank you with healthier, shinier foliage.
6. Look out for pests
Summer heat can bring unwanted visitors—especially spider mites and aphids. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and act fast if you spot any signs. Organic sprays or a shower under lukewarm water can help keep pests at bay.
7. Hold off on feeding
Avoid fertilising during very hot spells. Feeding can stress plants when they’re already under pressure from the heat. Resume your usual feeding routine when temperatures drop a bit.
